Surrey resident encourages others to get their flu vaccination

65 year old Surrey resident recieves her flu jab

A 65-year-old Surrey resident has rolled up her sleeve to show just how quick and easy it is to get protected this winter, as health leaders urge everyone eligible to book their flu vaccination as soon as possible.

The call comes as NHS leaders warn that an early flu wave could lead to a long and challenging winter for health services.

The UK Health Security Agency’s (UKHSA’s) latest surveillance data published last week shows cases of flu have increased from 6.1% up to 8.2% - this is up from 2.9% at this time last year.

This early increase has prompted concerns that flu could soon spread into the wider population, triggering a long and drawn-out flu season.

To reduce pressure on services and keep communities well, NHS teams are ramping up their autumn/winter flu vaccination campaign.

So far, over 12.2 million flu vaccines have been delivered across England this autumn (12,219,568).

In Surrey, as of 2 November 2025, more than 241,000 eligible people have already received their flu vaccinations.

It’s estimated that around 180,000 people in Surrey are still eligible and yet to come forward for their vaccine.

Dr Charlotte Canniff, Joint Chief Medical Officer for NHS Surrey Heartlands and a GP in West Surrey, said:

Flu can be serious for many people, particularly those who are older, pregnant, or have existing health conditions.

Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and those around you from becoming seriously unwell.

The vaccine is safe, quick and effective, and by getting it, you’re helping to keep yourself well and reduce pressure on our local NHS services this winter.

Debbie, a resident from East Surrey, said:

It only takes a few minutes, is pain-free and really gives me real peace of mind.

I’d really encourage anyone who’s eligible to book theirs as soon as possible. It’s such an easy way to protect yourself and your loved ones.
