NHS urges local people to get flu vaccine before winter peaks
NHS Surrey is reminding local people who are eligible to book their flu vaccination as soon as possible, as flu is circulating early this year.
National data shows this year’s flu vaccine is offering strong protection, especially for children.
Early results from the UK Health Security Agency show the flu vaccine is 70 to 75 per cent effective at preventing hospital attendance in children aged 2 to 17.
Even with flu arriving earlier than usual this year, the vaccine is key in protecting yourself and those around you.
Professor Andy Rhodes, Joint Chief Medical Officer for NHS Surrey Heartlands said:
Flu is on the rise in schools and amongst families.
The good news is the flu vaccine works and offers strong protection.
If you or your child are eligible, now is the time to get a vaccine before flu reaches its peak.
Every vaccination counts.
Clare Stone, Chief Nursing Officer for NHS Surrey Heartlands added:
The flu vaccine is safe, quick, and the best way to avoid serious illness.
We would encourage anyone who is eligible, including children, over 65s, pregnant women, and those with long term health conditions, to book their vaccine as soon as possible.
Protecting yourself also protects your family and keeps local NHS services strong.
People with symptoms such as a high temperature, cough, or feeling tired and achy should minimise contact with others, keep indoor spaces well ventilated, and wash hands regularly.
In Surrey more than 241,000 people who are eligible had already had their flu jab by the start of November, but around 180,000 were still to come forward.
You can book your flu vaccination through your GP, a local pharmacy, or the NHS App.
Getting your flu vaccine now helps protect you, your family, and our local NHS through the worst of winter.
