Construction has officially commenced on a new (circa) £20 million health facility in Weybridge, marking a major milestone in the redevelopment of the former hospital site.

The development is funded by the Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC), NHS Property Services (NHSPS) and NHS Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board (ICB).

The development represents one of the region’s most significant recent investments in primary and community healthcare infrastructure.

To mark the exciting milestone of the start of building works, a number of stakeholders visited the site this week to see first‑hand how the funding is being translated into visible progress.

During the visit, stakeholders were shown the construction area and were shown the planned layout of the facility, including main access points and the zones designated for clinical and community services.

Once complete, the new building will provide a modern, integrated health hub offering a wide range of services designed to meet current and future population needs.

The Phoenix Family Practice will relocate into the facility, which will also house maternity services, same‑day urgent care, diagnostics, and health and wellbeing support.

A flexible first‑floor space will enable the NHS to adapt services over time in response to changing local demand.

Vicky Stobbart, Director of Commissioning and Delivery for NHS Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board, said:

This is a significant milestone for the project.

The start of construction work represents years of planning and extended collaboration, where we have worked together to design a brand-new facility that will help improve the health and wellbeing of local people for generations to come.

Health Minister, Stephen Kinnock said:

This new health centre is leading the way as a one-stop shop bringing vital services together under one roof, right on people’s doorsteps – whether it’s a GP, maternity care, urgent care or wellbeing support.

For local people in Weybridge, this means fewer journeys, shorter waits and more coordinated support closer to home.

The centre will make care simpler, faster and more convenient, with earlier diagnosis, better prevention and a more seamless patient experience.

By investing in facilities like this, we are building an NHS that is fit for the future and designed around patients’ needs, shifting more care out of hospital and into the community.

Simon Taylor, Director Estates Policy, Strategy and Capital Projects, NHS Property Services said:

This groundbreaking event celebrates a key moment as construction begins on this £20 million investment in Weybridge.

We are focussed on delivering an NHS estate that is fit for the future and meets the modern health demands of communities across the country.

This new neighbourhood health facility will provide more services, which can often prevent ill health, closer to people’s homes, ensuring the Ten-Year-Health-Plan goals are achieved.

Dr Graeme Wilding – GP Partner from The Phoenix Family Practice said:

Over the past eight years, despite limited space and facilities, our staff at the Phoenix Family Practice has continued to provide safe, compassionate and professional care.

Reaching this stage is a significant milestone, and we’re delighted to see the new building finally underway.

The new facility will allow us to expand our services, offer a more welcoming environment for patients and give us the stability we need for the future.

Richard Poulter, Willmott Dixon’s Managing Director for the South, said:

We are pleased to mark the start of construction on this much needed community health facility for Weybridge.

This development will bring essential health and wellbeing services closer to residents, creating a modern, accessible centre shaped around the needs of the community.

With more than 100 healthcare construction projects, 30 of which have been community healthcare facilities, delivered across England and Wales over the past decade, our team brings deep experience in creating environments that support high quality patient care.

This new facility represents the next generation of neighbourhood health provision, designed with flexibility and long-term adaptability at its core.

Working closely with NHS Property Services and our project partners, we are committed to delivering a sustainable, high performing building that the people of Weybridge can be proud of.

We look forward to completing the new facility in 2027.

Steve McCarthy, Chair of the Patient Participation Group at The Phoenix Family Practice in Weybridge said:

Weybridge residents are looking forward to the completion of the new health centre.

It will provide much better accommodation for our GP Practice and will also bring back local community health services to the town.

The health facility at Weybridge is supporting the NHS 10-Year Health Plan’s vision to deliver a neighbourhood health service.

It is a sustainable response to the identified local needs for the area and forms part of a wider commitment to improve health outcomes, modernise infrastructure, and support population growth.

Further updates to be shared as construction progresses.
