Take care of your mental health this January
NHS Surrey Heartlands’ Chief Medical Officer is reminding residents that support is available for anyone struggling with their mental health this winter.
The start of January can feel particularly challenging as people return to everyday routines after the festive period.
Short days, cold weather, and the pressures of a new year can leave some feeling low, anxious or overwhelmed.
For others, feelings of loneliness, loss or stress may become more noticeable once the festive period has passed.
Existing mental health challenges can also feel harder to manage.
The message from NHS Surrey and partners is clear: you are not alone.
Reaching out for help can feel daunting, but it is a positive first step - whether you are struggling yourself, supporting someone else, or simply want to understand what help is available locally.
Dr Charlotte Canniff, Joint Chief Medical Officer for NHS Surrey Heartlands, said:
Winter can be a particularly tough time for mental wellbeing.
Asking for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Across Surrey, there are caring professionals and community services ready to listen and support you, whatever you’re going through.

Safe Havens across Surrey are open every evening and at weekends.
These welcoming, non-clinical spaces provide immediate support for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis. No appointment is needed, and support is available both in person and virtually.
Everyday support
If you’re feeling anxious, low or stressed but not in crisis, local NHS and community services that can help before things escalate.
You can self-refer to NHS Talking Therapies Surrey, a free service offering evidence-based support for anxiety, depression and related conditions — with no GP referral required.
Your GP can also connect you to a wide range of wellbeing and community programmes, including mindfulness sessions, group activities and one-to-one support, available through Healthy Surrey and Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
