Abdominal procedures: Repair of Diastasis of the Rectus Abdominis Muscle (surgery to close the defect and tighten up the two sides of the stomach muscle)

Overview

Abdominal rectus diastasis is a condition where the abdominal muscles are separated by an abnormal distance due to widening of the linea alba, which causes the abdominal content to bulge. Surgery to close the defect and tighten up the two sides of the rectus abdominis muscle can be carried out.

Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) treatment is for chronic stable angina.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) for Dropped Foot of Central Neurological Origin (a treatment that involves the application of a mild electrical stimulus to a muscle that helps it to move better)

Overview

FES involves stimulation of the peripheral nerves that supply paralysed muscles using electrodes. The  aim is to restore muscular function to improve lifting of the foot and achieving correct placement on the ground.

Overview

Gender Reassignment means proposing to undergo, undergoing or having undergone a process to reassign your gender.

The Gender Dysphoria service is commissioned, and applications are managed by NHS England.  ‘Non-core’ procedures are the commissioning responsibility of NHS Surrey Heartlands but are not routinely funded, i.e. Breast Reduction, Facial Feminisation Surgery, Lipoplasty/contouring and gametes storage so can only be considered as part of an IFR application.

Overview

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy helps wound healing by bringing oxygen-rich plasma to tissue starved for oxygen.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage - MLD (a way of reducing swelling caused by fluid build up after cancer treatment)

Overview

Manual Lymphatic Drainage relieves swelling that happens when medical treatment or illness blocks your lymphatic system.

Thresholds and eligibility 

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) for Lymphoedema is currently routinely funded.

However, if clinicians wish to provide Complex Decongestive Therapy of which MLD is usually a component, then pre-authorisation will need to be sought.

Pain management programmes in a residential setting. Pain Management Programmes (PMPs) help people to live with chronic pain by helping them to learn ways of dealing with the disabling effects and distress caused by being in pain.

Transfer of treatment: NHS patient transfers to private treatment providers

Overview

Transferring treatment from an NHS provider to a private provider.

Thresholds and eligibility 

When clinicians retire from the NHS they may continue to practice privately. Patients may wish to continue seeing them rather than see a new NHS clinician.  NHS Surrey Heartlands will not routinely fund private consultations or treatment where previously provided as an NHS funded service.

Trans-cranial doppler ultra-sonography with frequent transfusion to prevent stroke in children with sickle cell disease

Overview

Sickle cell disease is a congenital blood disorder which increases the risk of stroke.  Trans-cranial Doppler ultrasonography may be used to identify children at greater risk of this complication, who can then be treated by frequent blood transfusion.

Polysomnography in the investigation of children with sleep-related disorders (a test used to diagnose sleep disorders)

Polysomnography or sleep study is the main investigation for paediatric sleep disorders. It involves the continuous and simultaneous recording of multiple physiological parameters evaluating sleep and respiration.
